Ennis to Acquire Assets and Business of PrintXcel and Printegra from Cenveo

Ennis, Inc, a manufacturer of printed business products and apparel headquartered in Midlothian, TX, has agreed to acquire certain assets of Cenveo's document business including the manufacturing facilities branded under the names PrintXcel and Printegra. Sales from both businesses are approximately $80 million annually. The PrintXcel facilities are located in Visalia, CA; Toledo, OH; Clarkesville, TN and Fairhope, AL. The Printegra facilities are located in Livermore, CA; Arlington, TX; Smyrna, GA; Indianapolis, IN; Fairport, NY; and Greensboro, NC, with a sales office in Jaffrey, NH. Trade liabilities were assumed in the transactions and the transaction is expected to close during February of 2012.

The operations will continue to operate under their respective trade names of PrintXcel and Printegra. Ennis will continue to manufacture and market the pressure seal product line under the VersaSeal brand name. The acquisition will also expand the company's high color commercial print capabilities and business check product lines and will continued to be sold through the company's 40,000+ independent distributor network. The acquisition is expected to be accretive to Ennis' earnings in the first full year of operations. Substantially all of PrintXcel's and Printegra's employees will be offered positions with Ennis' new operation. Customers can continue contacting all of the locations under the same methods. No changes to the day to day operations are expected to be made.

Neenah Completes Purchase of Premium Brands from Wausau Paper

OpenText Brings Business Process Solutions to Windows Azure

Epson and Ninestar Announce Settlement of Disputes over Inkjet Cartridge Technologies

Seiko Epson Corporation, Epson America, Inc, Epson Portland Inc., Ninestar Technology Co. Ltd, and Ninestar Technology Company, Ltd. announce that the parties have settled all disputes relating to alleged infringements of Epson�s U.S. patents by Ninestar�s new and remanufactured cartridges. The comprehensive settlement includes actions pending before the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. and lawsuits filed the U.S. District Court in Portland, OR.

The parties reached a settlement agreement several months after the Oregon District Court granted certain of Epson�s motions for summary judgment. Without admitting any infringements, Ninestar agrees that the asserted Epson patents are valid and enforceable, that it will cease sales of the accused products and that it will not infringe the asserted Epson patents. Ninestar may, however, continue selling legally remanufactured cartridges.

The parties look forward to resolving any further intellectual property disputes without the recourse to litigation, when possible.

Investor Concept in Place for manroland

The creditors� committee of manroland Dr. Frank Kebekus was able to reach an amicable solution for an investor concept in the course of the company�s insolvency proceedings. During the meeting, in Augsburg, the solution to divide the company into three independent units turned out to be the preferred solution.

According to the concept, the Augsburg site (webfed printing systems), will be sold to the Possehl Group. The family business from L�beck in Northern Germany also plans to establish long term supplier relationships with the manroland factory in Plauen in order to secure full capacity at that site. Prospects of a subsequent share in the Plauen factory are on the horizon.

The factory in Plauen will be outsourced as a new company. There are positive signs of the timely acquisition of further third party orders, which will ensure the sustained survival of the Plauen factory.

The Offenbach site (sheetfed printing systems) will be restructured in the course of a management buyout in cooperation with an investor. This solution has a solid economic foundation and good future prospects. The financing concept does, however, require a guarantee by the federal state of Hessen. Talks have already been held on this matter.

All parties to the meeting agreed to remain silent on the purchase price for the company. In his statement, Schneider emphasized that the vote by the creditors� committee was not a formal decision but rather a recommendation. A final decision will be reached in the meeting of creditors; the committee�s vote does, however, send a strong signal.

The current investor concept is tied to downsizing measures. The Augsburg site will employ 1473 regular staff; all apprenticeship positions will be maintained. 750 employees will work in Offenbach and nearly 300 at the Plauen site.

Fujifilm Commences Tender Offer to Acquire SonoSite

Fujifilm Holdings Corporation, a diversified technology company that operates in healthcare, highly functional materials, and document solutions, announces the commencement of a tender offer through its indirect wholly owned U.S. subsidiary Salmon Acquisition Corporation for all outstanding shares of common stock of SonoSite, Inc. for $54 per share, net to the seller in cash, without interest and less any required withholding taxes.

The tender offer is being made pursuant to an Offer to Purchase, dated January 17, 2012, and in connection with the previously announced Agreement and Plan of Merger, dated December 15, 2011, among Fujifilm, Salmon Acquisition Corporation and SonoSite.

The tender offer is scheduled to expire on February 15, 2012, at 17:00 New York (Eastern Standard Time), subject to one or more possible extensions and a subsequent offer period.

The tender offer is conditioned on the tender of at least the number of shares that represents a majority of the outstanding shares of SonoSite common stock on a fully diluted basis as well as the receipt of certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Following the completion of the tender offer, Fujifilm intends to acquire the remaining outstanding shares of SonoSite common stock through a second step merger.

As previously disclosed, the SonoSite Board of Directors has approved the transaction by unanimous vote.

Upon completion of the acquisition, SonoSite will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujifilm and will continue operations in Bothell, WA. This transaction is a key element of Fujifilm's strategy to further strengthen its medical systems and life sciences business, as it seeks to comprehensively cover "prevention, diagnosis, and treatment" as a total healthcare company.

Leveraging their existing and future product portfolio, Fujifilm and SonoSite will be able to capture the significant growth opportunities arising from new application areas in point of care ultrasound diagnosis and treatment.

UPM Closes Down Albbruck Paper Mill

UPM will permanently close down the unprofitable Albbruck paper mill in Baden W�rttemberg, Germany. The discussions between UPM, the employee representatives and local authorities did not lead to a solution for continuing the operations at the mill. Neither was the search for an investor successful. The closure of the mill is affecting the 508 employees of the mill. The personnel reductions will take place on 31 January 2012.

During the negotiations concerning reconciliation of interest and social plan, issues such as pension schemes, support for re employment, relocations within the company, re training and compensation payments were discussed and agreed.

The sheeting lines of the mill will be transferred to the company�s paper mill in Plattling in order to complement UPM�s product portfolio. Approximately 30 new positions will be created through this measure and applications from Albbruck specialists will be prioritized .

UPM will participate in the follow up of the round table discussions about the possible future use of the mill premises. The discussions will be led by the local Chamber of Commerce.

The Albbruck decision finalizes the paper capacity closure plans that were announced by UPM last August. UPM Albbruck paper mill had a capacity of 320,000 tonnes of magazine papers. UPM Myllykoski paper mill in Finland with 600,000 tonnes of magazine papers was closed down on 9 December 2011 and the paper machine 3 at UPM Ettringen paper mill in Germany with 110,000 tonnes of newsprint was closed down on 14 December 2011.

The sales process of the Stracel paper mill in France is ongoing as planned.

EFI Expands Its Industrial Inkjet Addressable Market with Acquisition of Cretaprint

(EFI), announces that it has acquired privately held Cretaprint S.L., for approximately $31 million and an earn out of up to $21 million based on growth targets for 2012 and 2013. Cretaprint, with headquarters in Castell�n, Spain, is a developer and supplier of inkjet printers for ceramic tiles.

The company expects the transaction to be accretive to 2012 earnings and immaterial to first quarter 2012 earnings. Cretaprint is expected to contribute approximately 5% to 7% to EFI's 2012 revenue.

EFI will use its knowledge of inkjet technology to enhance Cretaprint's quality of output, software control, colour management and more. EFI's digital experience and imaging technology in combination with Cretaprint's ceramic tile printing will provide the industry with expanded offerings, enhanced workflow software and a worldwide support network that will expand Cretaprint's reach worldwide.

EFI plans to strengthen Cretaprint's operations in Spain, to further their expertise and innovation within the tile industry and to grow their market presence.

The company also announces preliminary results for the fourth quarter of 2011, ended December 31. For the fourth quarter the company expects record revenues of approximately $163 million, compared to $145 million in the fourth quarter of 2010, marking EFI's eighth consecutive quarter of double digit growth. Non GAAP earnings per share for the three months ended December 31, 2011 are expected to be $0.34 to $0.35 per share, which includes a non operational unfavorable currency impact of approximately $0.03, compared to earnings per share for the three months ended December 31, 2010 of $0.28 per share. The company noted that the results were driven by record revenue in both the inkjet and APPS segments, which contributed to continued strong growth in the company's recurring revenues.

For simplicity, the X S1 automatically assesses the subject and then selects the relevant scene mode for the perfect result, automatically switching the EXR CMOS sensor accordingly. Not only does it determine the type of scene being photographed, it can also calculate whether an image contains a person, features backlighting or has any subject movement. ISO settings are adjusted by the Auto ISO mode, which selects the optimum setting between ISO 100 and 3200. Those after more ISO flexibility can manually select up to ISO 12800 (Small JPEG format only).

The FUJIFILM X S1 captures full 1080p High Definition (1920 x 1080 pixels) movie with stereo sound at 30fps, which is saved in the H.264 format profile compression for smaller file sizes without sacrificing quality. With a mini HDMI output connector, it is easy to connect and view images on your HDTV (HDMI cable not included). Versatility is further increased thanks to the High Speed Movie options, which include capture at 320fps.

Wausau Paper Enters Agreement to Sell Premium Print and Color Brands and Announces Closure of Brokaw, WI Mill

Wausau Paper announces that its Board of Directors has approved the sale of its premium Print & Color brands, including Astrobrights, Astroparche and the Royal family of products, and closure of its Brokaw, Wisconsin, paper mill. The sale, to Neenah Paper, Inc., is scheduled to close on January 31, 2012. The Brokaw mill will be permanently closed by March 31, 2012, marking the end of the company's material participation in the print and color markets. The Brokaw shutdown will affect approximately 450 hourly and salaried jobs. This announcement reflects the outcome of a strategic review of alternatives for the Print & Color business, begun early in 2011.

The company will continue to support the product needs of its customers during transfer of the business to Neenah Paper.

Anticipated after tax closure related costs and impairment charges, net of proceeds from the premium brand sale, are expected to total approximately $49 million, or $1.00 per diluted share, including after tax non cash charges of $45 million, or $.92 per diluted share. In the fourth quarter of 2011, after tax charges are expected to be approximately $49 million, or $0.99 per diluted share, with non cash charges totaling approximately $48 million, or $.96 per diluted share, including approximately $38 million, or $0.78 per diluted share, related to the impairment charge on mill assets. Remaining closure related charges, net of the proceeds from the premium brand sale, will be recognized during 2012. Sales proceeds and liquidation of working capital, net of closure costs, are expected to generate estimated cash flows of approximately $20 million in 2012. Fuji Xerox Launches New Multifunction Devices Along with Cloud and Mobile Solutions

Along with the six models of ApeosPort IV and DocuCentre IV series of monochrome digital multifunction devices recently launched, all 19 models carry the latest common controller software to provide advanced features that cater to the environment friendliness, convenience, and new work styles.

All of the new models feature Fuji Xerox's proprietary Smart Power Saving Technology. The technology contributes to saving energy by only distributing power to areas actually used in the scanning unit, control panel, output unit or controller when a device recovers from the energy saving mode. As only the area that is being used runs, the devices do not make unnecessary noise and users can operate on a control panel without waiting for a device to reboot.

Further, Fuji Xerox developed the eight models in the full color digital multifunction device series (excluding DocuCentre IV C2263) based on the RealGreen concept to pursue pleasant eco features. They are the first to incorporate Fuji Xerox's proprietary motion sensor technology, Smart WelcomeEyes, as well as the technology that enables high speed recovery of the devices. These technologies enables the devices to automatically recover from the sleep mode when a user approaches the machine. Coupled with the IH fuser that has the world's fastest startup time of just three seconds, the devices allow users to make a copy or to do other operations with hardly any waiting time.

The devices offer the Server Less On Demand Print function, which diverts an output instruction to an available multifunction device if the specified device is in use. Until now, such functionality required the use of a server application; however, this technology eliminates the need for a server to reduce the amount of initial investment, and enables an office with space constraints to utilize the function without having to install a server.

The devices can also scan and convert paper documents into editable Microsoft Word or Excel� filesNote. This function streamlines business operations by reducing the workload for manual text input, diagram drawing and other digitization tasks on existing hardcopy documents.

Together with the new multifunction devices, Fuji Xerox launches its own cloud based online document sharing service, Working Folder, which directly links with the devices. Users can print out a shared document on the cloud with simple operations on the device's control panel, or scan a new document for immediate sharing on the cloud, which would facilitate intra and inter company collaboration. Such documents on the cloud can be accessed from a PC, smartphone or tablet device, enabling mobile information sharing without place constraints and facilitating swift decision making.

Fuji Xerox has enhanced log management software ApeosWare Log Management 1.2, which is a component of ApeosWare Management Suite, by adding a feature to help reduce environmental loads. The control panel of the multifunction devices displays the eco level of individual users to promote their environmental awareness. Also, the software monitors how each device or printer is being operated, and provides a power saving controlling function, which automatically sets the optimum transition time to the power saving mode.

Denshi Pen is a solution to easily and swiftly digitize hand written information on paper. By connecting Denshi Pen with a PC, users can digitize information hand written on the special paper with embedded digital codes, which can be printed out from the new full color digital multifunction devices. Digitization of hand written information encourages sharing, searching and reusing of the data, which will streamline business operations.

Drawing Differential Detection Box compares an original drawing and its revised version, and identifies any changes as differential information to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of drawing revision work. EDI Link Fax Transmission Box and Mission Critical Link FAX Transmission Box receive data from the EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) system or other mission critical systems, generate forms to be submitted to clients, and automatically transmit them by fax, thereby rationalizing a series of tasks that were previously handled manually. timdoo Launches Facebook Photo-Specialty Application for Printing at HP Indigo PSPs

According to Bespoke, HP announces that timdoo, of San Francisco, CA, an on line applications developer, has launched a Facebook integrated service to enable people to order photo specialty products using images on Facebook and printed by HP Indigo print service providers (PSPs).

The application was launched in a test market in October and initially serves the German speaking markets of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The service�s first PSP is Bosch Druck GmbH, of Ergolding, Germany, which will receive the orders for fulfillment direct from people who use Facebook.

The decision to work with PSPs that have HP Indigo presses was not only based on the quality of print achievable even from lower resolution images, but also because of the existing strength of photo specialty expertise in the HP Indigo community.

Fujifilm Introduces the X-S1 Camera

Fujifilm announces that the X series of cameras has a third model, the X S1. The X S1 was built in Japan to exacting standards, and the body has a high quality look and feel with metal dials, a rubberized coating, and handling characteristics that will appeal to the photo enthusiast.

In addition, the X S1 offers picture taking performance to match its looks. From the Fujinon 26x optical zoom lens through to the EXR sensor taken from the X10 and the wide range of functions, the X S1 puts the photographer in complete control.

The centerpiece of the X S1 is the Fujinon 26x optical zoom lens. Offering a range of 24 624mm (35mm equivalent) it caters perfectly for every photographic need and features an f/2.8 maximum aperture at the wide angle setting. This optical range is boosted further by Fujifilm's Intelligent Digital Zoom capability, which doubles the focal range without a drop in picture quality. As a result, the X S1 offers users a 52x zoom range of 24 1248mm (35mm equivalent).

Optically, the lens comprises 17 glass elements, which includes four aspherical elements and two ED lenses, to deliver images with edge to edge sharpness and clarity. The lens' construction features metal cams for smooth zoom control and precise framing.

The X S1 is also suited to capturing subjects close up. In standard mode, the zoom focuses down to 30cm, but by selecting Super Macro Mode, users can focus down to 1cm for frame filling close up images. Furthermore, the lens' aperture is made up of nine blades for excellent bokeh effect photography.

The X S1 features the same 2/3 inch 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor as the X10 which ensures high quality images regardless of the lighting conditions.

The unique EXR CMOS technology allows the user to switch between three modes depending on the lighting conditions or leave the camera to make its own choice in the Auto EXR mode. Switching between the modes changes the performance of the sensor. The High Resolution option is perfect in bright conditions or when the very best picture quality is the primary aim. Wide Dynamic Range mode should be chosen in scenes of high contrast when the user wants to get details in both shadow and highlight areas of an image, while the High Sensitivity & Low Noise option should be selected for optimum results in low light conditions.

Coupled to the EXR CMOS sensor is the high speed EXR processor, which offers a minimal shutter lag of just 0.01sec and a high speed continuous shooting capability of seven frames per second at full resolution (Large JPEG) or 10 frames per second at six megapixel resolution (Medium JPEG).

The X S1 also takes high quality movies. It captures Full High Definition (1920 x 1080 pixels) video with stereo sound at 30 frames per second, which is saved in the H.264 format.

The X S1 offers a combination of high quality electronic viewfinder and rear LCD to ensure composing and viewing images is quick and simple, regardless of the lighting conditions.

The 0.47 inch electronic viewfinder (EVF) features 1.44 million pixels for image clarity and has a wide viewing area of 26 degrees to reduce eye strain. The bright EVF makes it easy to check settings or adjust focus manually.

On the back of the X S1 is a tiltable three inch LCD. It features 460,000 pixels making it easier for users to scroll through menus, assess exposure accuracy and view images. The LCD also offers a useful Daylight mode that overcomes the problem of viewing the screen in bright conditions.

The X S1 offers functionality whether users want to make picture taking as simple as using a compact or as involved as a fully manual digital SLR. For simplicity, the X S1 will assess the subject and then select the relevant scene mode for the perfect result, automatically switching the EXR CMOS sensor accordingly. It can also calculate whether an image contains a person, features backlighting, or has any subject movement. ISO settings are taken care of too by the Auto ISO mode, which selects the optimum setting between ISO 100 and 3200. Those after more ISO flexibility can select up to ISO 12800 (Small JPEG format only).

Photographers after full control are well catered for with the X S1. The camera offers a full range of conventional shooting functions (program/aperture priority/shutter priority/manual), plus users can also fine tune levels of color, image sharpness, and tone. Additionally, the X S1 provides four auto bracketing options, eight Film Simulation and white balance functions and a Raw file format.

Xerox and UCLH Announce Managed Print Services Agreement

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) announces plans to save on its office printing costs by using Xerox managed print services.

The seven year Enterprise Print Services agreement will enable the Trust to take control of its printing processes and costs and forms part of a wider project by Logica to create an intelligent back office infrastructure for the Trust.

Until now, managing print operations at UCLH has been difficult due to the sheer size of the Trust�s estate, which includes around 7,000 clinical, research, and teaching staff across six hospitals, an international education and research center, and numerous administrative buildings.

The Xerox program includes the replacement of approximately 3,000 printers and more than 100 copiers and fax machines with 300 networked multi functional devices and 1,100 printers. Working with Xerox as its sole supplier, UCLH will find efficiencies on various levels. The Trust will have one point of contact for all its print and document management needs, and it will uncover cost drains like personal device ownership and uncontrolled printing costs.

The managed print service will provide the Trust with data on devices and document printing and associated costs, across its entire campus. The Trust will be able to fix device faults remotely and replace consumables such as toner before they run out and recharge printing costs internally to departments for the first time.

To support UCLH�s increasingly mobile workforce, Xerox is launching a mobile print service across the Trust�s campus. Hospital staff will be able to print business critical information directly from their hand held mobile devices, anytime and anywhere on campus, securely, and without the hassle of downloading software.

UCLH is the only NHS hospital trust to have a fully outsourced IT infrastructure and application management service, and Xerox is working with Logica to integrate the managed print service into its broader IT service.

Kodak Teams with LifePics to Streamline Online Photo Merchandizing for Retailers

Eastman Kodak Company enters a partnership with Boulder, Colo. based LifePics, a web based fulfillment of photo merchandizing products, to jointly develop and market a suite of pre integrated retail photo merchandizing services.

The new services allow photo retailers to leverage their existing fleets of Kodak photofinishing equipment to enter the net to retail fulfillment business, and offer consumers the convenience of ordering photos online, and picking them up the same day at the retail location. The first two services, private labeled net to retail photo order fulfillment and in store photo specialty gift catalog ordering, are available now to all U.S. retailers.

The net to retail order fulfillment path for photo merchandise is growing steadily in the U.S. According to InfoTrends, more than 21% of printed photo merchandise products (photo books, cards, calendars, and specialty prints) that are ordered online in 2011 will be fulfilled in a retail store. That percentage is expected to approach 28% by 2015. The Kodak and LifePics partnership allows retailers who have made an investment in Kodak in store equipment to participate in this market.

The P 215 measures only 11 inches long, weighs just over two pounds, and incorporates an automatic document feeder in a sleek design. To complement the ADF, this scanner also includes an integrated card scanner, capable of handling plastic ID cards, driver licenses, and embossed cards.

Using electrical power via a single USB cable, the P 215 scanner can scan a batch of up to 20 documents at its maximum scanning speed of 15 pages per minute (ppm) in color or black and white and yet still fits into a briefcase for portable and mobile users. The scanner also includes features such as Character Emphasis and Auto Resolution to improve the legibility and clarity of hard to capture documents.

The Canon P 215 scanner launches Canon CaptureOnTouch Lite immediately upon connecting to a PC. This "Plug and Scan" capability allows users to initiate scanning without installing drivers or applications. The scanner is also bundled with CaptureOnTouch, which enables users to scan directly to select cloud applications such as Evernote, Microsoft SharePoint, and Google Docs, further improving accessibility to information and collaboration.

Panasonic and Leica Update Camera Firmware

Consolidated Graphics Installs Kodak Prosper 5000XL Press

Consolidated Graphics, Inc. has purchased a KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press for its Automated Graphic Systems (AGS) facility in White Plains, MD. AGS is using the PROSPER Press to extend its technology position in the market and provide full color, on demand publishing to its broad range of clients.

Consolidated Graphics installed the press in November 2010 as part of the PROSPER Press pioneer program and has been evaluating the device in a production environment with outstanding results. The PROSPER 5000XL Press joins the more than 30 KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Production Color Presses installed in multiple Consolidated Graphics companies to deliver digital printing options from lower volumes to very high speed.

The KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press brings offset class output approaching 175 lines per inch with roll fed speeds of up to 650 feet (or 200 meters) per minute. The press features a monthly duty cycle of up to 90 million A4 pages and is able to handle both coated and uncoated papers, including gloss coated, with basis weights ranging from 45 gsm�300 gsm (30 lbs�200 lbs). This combination of speed and superior quality makes the PROSPER 5000XL Press one of the most productive inkjet web presses on the market for 8 , 12 , and 16 page signatures.
